Founded in 1845, the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) is an independent art school that has 10 specialist departments within Fine Art and Design. The world famous "Mackintosh Building" is the heart of the GSA campus in Glasgow City Centre, while the Digital Design Studio is based in House for an Art Lover, a Mackintosh design building completed in 1996. The Glasgow School of Art is made up of the School of Design, the School of Fine Art, the Mackintosh School of Architecture with the Department of Historical and Critical Studies. The GSA building was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the most influential artist, designer, architects of the late 19th and early 20th century. The Mackintosh School of Architecture is ranked as the top architecture school in Scotland and 3rd in the UK by the Architects Journal. At the Venice Biennale 2007, the most prestigious international art event in the world, five of the siz artists chosen to represent Scotland were GSA graduates. Design Week Magazine included the GSA in 2007 in its HOT 50 - leaders in design education.
