Established in in 1891, the Goldsmiths College - University of London is made up of fifteen different academic departments and is best known for courses and research relating to creativity and culture.
Located in New Cross, South East London, Goldsmiths College offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, teacher training, short courses, and widening participation opportunities in a wide range of subjects in the arts, social sciences, humanities and computing.
Goldsmiths fosters a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to working: psychologists work with computer scientists, artists with cultural theorists, musicians with anthropologists. Goldsmiths College is one of eighteen institutions in the 1994 Group of research-focused universities, denoting excellence not just in research, but also in levels of teaching and student experience (http://www.gold.ac.uk/about/).
Goldsmiths College is also particularly known for producing artists. Significant numbers of graduate students from the art department over the last several decades are widely acknowledged as having achieved international acclaim and have regularly featured in such events as Turner Prize, Becks Futures Prize, John Moores Prize and Paul Hamlyn Awards. Five graduates have won the Turner Prize.
The facilities at Goldsmiths include textile laboratories and research facilities for media research, fine art print, photography, casting, metal and woodwork.
The Design department is also well recognised with students winning numerous awards (including UK Young Designer of the Year and Eco-Designer of the Year). The most recent National Student Survey marked Goldsmiths undergraduate design students as the most employable in the country, with 98% of graduates securing a design-related job in their first year after graduation (http://www.goldsmiths.ac.uk/design/).
Goldsmiths College also offers programs in music and theatre.
'The Department of Music at Goldsmiths has a distinguished tradition within the older university sector and is currently one of the top-ranking Departments in the country (with a '5' rating in both the 1996 and 2001 Research Assessment Exercises').(http://www.goldsmiths.ac.uk/music/)
Goldsmiths College has ranked second in 2008 out of all the UK's universities in a new league table which measures what is being said about them in online blogs, according to research compiled by Portfolio Communications, based on an analysis of the content of almost 4,000 sites (http://www.gold.ac.uk/news/pressrelease/?releaseID=681).
