Art Schools> Tips on choosing an art school

Choosing the right art school is an important decision and it can be very hard to narrow it down when there are so many to choose from. You might be seraching for a course or degree in a subject that you're particularly interested in, or choose a qualification that will help you advance in your intended career.

You will notice on the All About Art School directory, references to rankings and reviews. While these can be useful, it should not be assumed that it will be the right school for you. Below are some questions that you should consider when doing your research.

Education goals and career choices

- Will the programs qualify me for the kind of career I want?
- Do I want a more traditional 'atelier' style school or a school that has a focus on offering courses with an emphasis on preparing students for careers in design, advertising or business?
- Would I like a course that involves networking and making contacts in the industry?
- Do I know exactly what degree is required for my career of choice?

Content, quality and choice

- Do I want a degree course?
- What do I want to major in?
- Am I passionate about my subject?
- If I decide to change my major will the college provide the scope for me to do that?
- do I work best under pressure in an end-of-year exam, or would I prefer to be continuously assessed throughout the year?
- What other concentrations within majors are available?
- How long is the course?
- How much can I afford to spend on college?
- If I am wanting to study a degree program, is the school accredited?
- Am I willing to ask the Admissions department for advice before applying?
- Will I want a school that encourages students to determine their own education and learning through experimentation?
-Do I want to be taught through lectures and seminars, or would I prefer a degree that features studio or laboratory work?
- Do I want more time in a campus studio..or more time in my home studio?
- Who are the faculty? Will their teaching methods and career backgrounds suit me?

Location Location

- Is the location of the school beneficial to my needs? Will the immediate environment provide the stimulus I require for my education?
- Will I be comfortable at a large school?
- Will I be happier at a co-ed or single gender college?
- Is distance a factor?
- Am I willing to visit the campus before applying, especially if it's an international school?
- Would I rather be at a campus in the country or a campus in the city?
- What facilities do they have at the school? Will these facilities meet my requirements for getting the best out of my education?

Getting in

- Do I have the right credentials to apply?
- Will they require a portfolio or an audition?
- Will they accept work experience towards fulfilling my course requirements?
- When is the deadline for application?
