Fran Callen
Australian painter Fran Callen, completed Visual Arts at the South Australian School of Art in 1997, majoring in painting and photography. Fran also attended Masterclasses in Painting with Chelsea Lehmann at the Adelaide Central School of Art. Throughout 1996 she worked at Muloorina Station in Far North SA, which inspired a body of work for fourth year at S.A.S.A. and her first solo exhibition at Greenhill Galleries (1999).
Fran was awarded the Ruth Tuck Scholarship to study Painting at the Santa Repararta International School of Art in 2003.
Fran travelled to India in 2007 as part of the Helpmann Academy's international residency program. Her drawings, paintings and mixed media works explore observations of human behavior. Fran also sketches obsessively at gigs, events and festivals capturing social interaction and body language within different subcultures, and cultures.
As a community artist she has enjoyed working with a variety of cultural and community groups, in remote areas including Nepabunna and Iga Warta communities, Marree Aboriginal School, and also in metropolitan Adelaide, including the Grove Special School, and Mawson Lakes School in collaboration with Helping Hand Aged Care. Her passion for Community Art lead her to volunteer in Kathmandu, Nepal, and in New Delhi, India, to work with disadvantaged schools and orphanages on community art projects in 2006 and 2007.
In 2008 and 2009 she has been teaching drawing at the South Australian School of Art, and at Tauondi Aboriginal College.
